Tobacco use will affect your life insurance premiums, but, like with most things, there are caveats and exceptions. Alternate uses of tobacco should not affect your rates as much as regular cigarette use would.
Regular cigarette smoking will without question put you in a higher risk category and make the rates higher. In order to not be classified as a smoker, you must be cigarette-free for at least a year.
If you use alternate forms of tobaccos, such as pipes, cigars, snuff, dips, chews, etc., you may still be able to get better rates than cigarette smokers. You will be qualified as a smoker, but you may qualify as a light smoker and save a significant amount of money. You must alert the agent of your use, but there are many carriers who do not take in to account non-cigarette use of tobacco or at least mitigate it.
