Modern day insurance shoppers have a range of options when it comes to getting the best rate on insurance purchases, no matter whether they are looking to insure their home, their car, or even their life – and comparing free insurance quotes prior to purchase is always a wise idea.  There are many different factors that go into play when an insurance company calculates the rates that they will charge you to extend coverage to you, which means that getting a free insurance quote from several different companies before making a decision about which to go with is very important.

While each type of insurance (and each insurance company) has a specific formula that they use to determine the rates that they will charge you for your policy, there are some basic calculations that most insurers use when preparing free insurance quotes.  Let’s look at what the insurance company takes into consideration for four main insurance types: car or automobile insurance, health insurance, life insurance and home insurance.

  • Auto insurance - You can expect that obvious factors will be used to determine the rates that you will pay for auto insurance, like your previous driving record, your age and sex, and the type of car that you want to insure, but you may not know that other things go into the quotes that insurers arrive at, like your credit history, and the state or area of a state in which you live.
  • Health insurance - The biggest factor behind health insurance quotes and the rates that you will pay for health insurance is your (surprise) health.  Most insurance companies will take a look at your current state of health, your age, your sex, and whether or not you smoke before giving you a free insurance quote.  There is a move in government legislation (as of the time of this writing) to remove the barrier of pre-existing conditions from effecting the price of health insurance, but current regulations allow insurers to take into account any diseases or medical conditions that you have in determining your health insurance rate, and whether or not they will insure you at all.
  • Life insurance – The factors that are used to determine health insurance quotes are also used (for the most part) when determining life insurance quotes.  Life insurance quotes will also be based on factors other than your health, including any risky activity that you participate in (like holding a dangerous job), among other things.  Your current health, including your weight and your habits (like smoking or alcohol consumption) will also determine the cost of your life insurance, and whether or not you qualify for coverage.
  • Home insurance –  Home insurance quotes are based obviously on the value of your home and your home’s age, but are also determined by the proximity of your home to the nearest fire department, whether you have a home security system, and the amount that you wish to insure your home’s contents for, among other things.

As you can see, with so many factors being used by insurance companies to determine the rates you receive from your free insurance quotes, it is important to be educated and compare.
