The insurance companies group people in to general categories to determine their rates. The healthier you are, the less your premiums will be for the same amount of insurance. All of these are subjective, to a certain extent. There are no hard rules about which category you are in based on your health.
Preferred Plus- This is the best category. You must have no health issues, nor a history of health issues. You can have no present nor past use of alcohol nor tobacco and not engage in any dangerous activities.
Preferred- This the second best level. Yo must be in overall good health and not engage in dangerous activities.
Standard- Some minor issues affecting health such as elevated cholesterol or slightly elevated blood pressure. Some weight issues or a minor past history of heath issues.
Substandard- This is the riskiest category. People with a fair amount of health issues are in this category. Such issues as a major prior history of disease or even current health issues. They will pay the highest premiums.
